Herron's summer exhibit spotlights faculty expertise and creativity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS -- This summer, the Galleries at Herron School of Art and Design will offer a glimpse into the diverse work of 35 faculty members who contribute to IUPUI's intellectual culture and the Indianapolis arts community. The exhibition, which opens on June 22 and will be on display until Sept. 1, will fill all of the school's galleries in Eskenazi Hall. A closing reception will be held in Eskenazi Hall from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1.

Herron's Biennial Faculty Exhibition, a four-decade tradition, showcases the outstanding work of the school's nationally and internationally recognized art and design faculty. This year's exhibition, which was originally scheduled for 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic, includes more than 50 works from the studio practices and research projects of full-time, adjunct, and visiting professors, and includes animation, book arts, ceramics, fiber art, intermedia, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and written material.

"The Biennial Faculty Exhibition is a must-see opportunity for the university and surrounding communities to see the varied work of Herron's educators, who are without question some of the best artists, designers and scholars working in Indianapolis today," said Joseph Mella, director and curator of the Herron Galleries.

Participating faculty members are Anila Quayyum Agha, Karen Baldner, Sydney Craig, Doug Daniel, Andrew Perry Davis, Stephanie Doty, Ray Duffey, Matthew Eickhoff, Reagan Furqueron, Aaron Ganci, Anita Giddings, Robert Horvath, Greg Hull, Lowell Isaac, Sarah Jones, Mary McClung, Gurkan Maruf Mihci, Jeanne Nemeth, Matt Panfil, Melissa Parrott Quimby, Stefan Petranek, William Potter, Danielle Riede, Cory Robinson, Joani Rothenberg, Meredith Setser, Jared Cru Smith, Jake Sneath, Shelley Spicuzza, Carolyn Springer, Sherry Stone, Uranchimeg Tsultem, Claire White, Andrew Todd Winship, and Luba Halicki Winship.

Related public programming

In late August, a series of artist's gallery talks and demonstrations will take place as part of the exhibition. These events will be held in person and are free and open to the public.

  • Greg Hull, 12-1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, Marsh Gallery, Eskenazi Hall. Hull will demonstrate a new image-generating technology that he and his collaborators, art therapist Juliet King and neurologist Dr. Robert Pascuzzi, developed as part of a clinical study to improve the quality of life of patients and families affected by A.L.S., also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control.
  • Stefan Petranek, 12-1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 26, Berkshire, Reese and Paul Galleries, Eskenazi Hall. In this noon-time gallery talk, Petranek will discuss a new work that is a continuation of his investigation into the impact of global warming, visualizing the far-reaching consequences of this often-invisible crisis confronting our planet.
  • Lowell Isaac, 12-1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 30, Berkshire, Reese, and Paul Galleries, Eskenazi Hall. Isaac will discuss his recent hand-drawn animation, "Onion Detective" (2021), which highlights his incredible range as an animator and his inherent sense of humor informed by the medium's history.
