Every three months, we publish a roundup of the most recent updates from the Herron community. Here's a look at what our students, alums, and faculty were up to between April and June 2023, including exhibitions, publications, career moves, accomplishments, and accolades.

  • The 2023 Biennial Faculty Exhibition featuring 46 faculty members opened on June 21 and will continue through Aug. 30 in the Herron Galleries. Participating artists included Allison Baker, Karen Baldner, James Brown, Elaine Cardella-Tedesco, Aaron S. Coleman (B.F.A. Printmaking '09), Sydney Craig (M.F.A.   • Tasha Beckwith (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '06) was honored with a 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award on May 13 at the Madam Walker Legacy Center during the school's year-end recognition event. Learn more about her work via a Q&A.
  • Tasha Beckwith (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '06), J.D. Bills (B.F.A. Integrative Studio Practice '16), Hector Del Campo (B.F.A. Painting '99), William Denton Ray, Christina Hollering (M.F.A. Visual Art '22; B.F.A. Painting '12), Lisa Sears (B.A.E. Art Education + B.F.A. General Fine Arts '11), and Julie Xiao (M.F.A. Visual Art '23) showed their work in "#KeepIt500" from May 5 to June 22, 2023, at Gallery 924 at the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
  • Serena Boehmer (B.F.A. Drawing & Illustration '19), Parrish Cooper (B.F.A. Painting '09), Vicky Shaffer White (B.F.A. Painting '84) and Jessica Saunders (B.F.A. Painting '17) exhibited their work in "Hoosier Artists Across Indiana" at the Indiana Statehouse. The exhibition opened on May 24 and will remain on view through Sept. 22, 2023.
  • In May, Melissa Capriglione (B.F.A. Drawing & Illustration '17) debuted "Basile and Oregano," a young adult LGBTQIA+ graphic novel published by Dark Horse Comics.
  • Aaron S. Coleman (B.F.A. Printmaking '09), Herron's Kenneth E. Tyler Chair, was one of eight artists chosen to begin New Voices, a pilot program at the Print Center New York meant to assist the professional growth of emerging artists who engage with print medium meaningfully.
  • Sydney Craig (M.F.A. Visual Art '17), coordinator and acting assistant professor of foundations studies, was awarded a Virtual Global Learning Fellow Grant from the Office of International Affairs in June. Funds from the grant will be used to study about and offer a virtual exchange with an international partner at Germany's Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt.
  • Kim Fuelling (B.F.A. Painting '99) and Paul Fuelling (B.F.A. Painting '97), co-owners of Mabel Studios, exhibited their work in "FUN + GAMES" at Common Good Company in Boone, North Carolina, in May.
  • Jason Gray (B.F.A. Furniture Design '11) displayed his work at "Cthutopia" at Big Car's Tube Factory Artspace in Indianapolis from April 7 to May 21.
  • In June, Nickel Plate Arts in Fishers showcased works by Liz Hamstra (B.F.A. Ceramics '10) in their Stephenson House galleries.
  • Laura Holzman, an associate professor of art history and museum studies and Public Scholar of Curatorial Practices and Visual Art, and Elizabeth Kryder-Reid, Chancellor's Professor of Anthropology and Museum Studies in the IU School of Liberal Arts, were named 2023 recipients of a Charles R. Bantz Community Fellowship Award. As co-principal investigators, Holzman and Kryder-Reid will work on a project titled "Indy Toxic Heritage: Pollution, Place, and Power,” in partnership with The Kheprw Institute, Indy Parks and Recreation, and residents of the Norwood and Riverside neighborhoods, during the coming academic year.
  • Kyle Kingen (B.A. Art History '20) wrote an article for the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis about Olive A. Jackson, a 1914 alum and Herron's first Black Female student.
  • The Eiteljorg Museum's blog highlighted Registrar April Knauber (B.F.A. Sculpture '19) in a "five questions" Q&A.
  • Brenna McCarty, an integrative studio practice student, was commissioned to create a new permanent art installation for the Indianapolis International Airport (IND). McCarty's creation will be the new terminal's first permanent art installation since it opened in 2008. Her work, "Blue Skies," is one of five special projects commemorating The International Center's 50th anniversary. It will be installed this fall, suspended above the escalators and stairs leading into the IND terminal's Baggage Claim area.
  • Stefan Petranek, an associate professor of foundations and photography, exhibited in a solo show titled "Connecting Time & Space Across the Anthropocene" at the National Art Gallery of Mongolia from May 26 to June 19, 2023. The exhibition was curated by Uranchimeg Tsultem, an assistant professor of art history and the Edgar and Dorothy Fehnel Chair in International Studies.
  • Sheafer & King Fine Art and Design in Indianapolis opened a retrospective exhibition of works by Herron alum Steve Redman on June 23. The exhibit will be on display at 1103B E. 52nd St. in South Broad Ripple through July 13. Learn more about Redman via a piece written by Hailey Younkin (B.A. Art History '22).
  • Lynnette Therese Sauer (B.F.A. Painting '16) participated in "Alternate Side Parking," a group show held at Starta Arta in New York, New York, from April 26 to May 26, 2023.
  • Commercial Article 15, the latest design-forward magazine about Indianapolis history created and designed by James Sholly (B.F.A. Visual Communication '87) and Jon Sholly (B.F.A. Visual Communication '03), was featured by Steven Heller in Print Magazine's "The Daily Heller" column.
  • Uranchimeg Tsultem, assistant professor of art history and the Edgar and Dorothy Fehnel Chair in International Studies, organized a symposium titled "Emergency of Emergencies: The Aesthetics & Politics of Climate Justice" in Eskenazi Hall's Basile Auditorium on May 4 that included guest speakers T.J. Demos, Jason M. Kelly, and Stefan Petranek, as well as her own presentation.
  • The Indianapolis Black Firefighters Museum opened in May in the formerly decommissioned firehouse at 1201 East 46th Street, with exhibition designs and displays created by Samuel Vázquez (B.F.A.Visual Communication Design '10), an associate faculty member of visual communication design.
