Winter 2022 Herron Highlights

Every three months, we publish a roundup of the most recent updates from the Herron community. Here's a look at what our students, alumni, and faculty were up to between January and March 2022, including exhibitions, publications, career moves, accomplishments, and accolades.

  • Southwest Contemporary published a story in January on the work of Anila Quayyum Agha, an associate professor of foundation studies and drawing and illustration, prior to the debut of her new solo exhibition. "Mysterious Inner Worlds" opened on Feb. 18 at the University of New Mexico Art Museum (UNMAM) and will be on display through July 2. She took part in a public discussion with Mary Statzer, UNMAM's curator of prints and photographs.
  • Karen Baldner, an adjunct printmaking instructor, discussed teaching strategies from her art practice that can be applied in classrooms across campus as part of an IUPUI Faculty Crossing lecture series.
  • Audrey Barcio (B.A.E. Art Education '07) had a solo show, "No Subject (Non-attachment)," at Echo Arts in Bozeman, Montana. It opened in December and closed in February. Read a feature on her, published by Ball State Daily News in January.
  • In January, Mac Blackout (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '99) unveiled "Kaleidoscopic Playground," a series of four murals at Google's Chicago office in Fulton Market.
  • Palm Springs Life spoke with Andrew Blauvelt (B.F.A. Visual Communication '86), director of the Cranbrook Art Museum, ahead of his lecture, "Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen: Friends, Collaborators, and Competitors," which took place on Feb. 21 as part of Modernism Week. Read the Q&A.
  • Torry Brown (B.F.A. Photography), Savannah Calhoun (B.F.A. Photography '19), Claire Hegge (B.F.A. Photography '21), Asli Narin, an adjunct instructor of photography, and Stefan Petranek, an associate professor of foundations and photography, all exhibited work in "New Photography 2022" at the Arts Council of Indianapolis' Gallery 924 from Feb. 4 to March 17.
  • The Indiana State Museum included recently collected pieces by several Herron artists in "Collecting Indiana: Recent Art Acquisitions." Featured artists include Philip Campbell (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '89), a collective of Herron alums called The Droops (Adam Wollenberg, Ash Windbigler, Brock Forrer, Ally Alsup, Emily Gable, and Paul Pelsue), Gary Gee (B.F.A. Integrative Studio Practice '16), John Paul Gee (B.F.A. Painting '63), Marie Goth, Professor Emeritus David Morrison, Lois Main Templeton (B.F.A. Painting '81), and Beatriz Vasquez (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '06). The exhibition opened on Feb. 5 and will remain on view through July 17.
  • Alumnae and faculty members' works were chosen for the 2022 Hoosier Women Artists exhibition in offices at the Indiana Statehouse. Participating Herron artists include Alicia Criswell, an adjunct art therapy instructor, Mary Firtl (B.F.A. Painting '78), Blythe Hager (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '92), Eileen Misluk, an assistant professor of art therapy, Susan Ring, Carolyn Roth (B.F.A. Painting '67), Lisa Sears (B.A.E. Art Education '11), and Sherry Stone, a teaching professor of foundations. On March 3, all 44 artists were recognized at a reception where Shelby Nower (B.F.A. Drawing & Illustration '20) and Kassie Woodworth (B.F.A. Sculpture '19) spoke.
  • Andrew Perry Davis, Herron's ceramics technician, was featured in "Hollow Dusk," a three-person exhibition at the Harrison Center for the Arts in Indianapolis, which ran through January.
  • Sean Foley (B.F.A. Painting '91) opened a solo exhibition, "Banjaxed," on March 3 at the Ohio State University at Lima's Farmer Family Gallery. His work will be on display through April 21.
  • On the Design Minded podcast in March, visual communication design faculty members Aaron Ganci and Youngbok Hong discussed the growth of the design profession and design thinking. Listen to the episode on Mixcloud.
  • Herron senior Chris Holland was featured on Indy Now, Fox59's lifestyle show, discussing the artistry in his pastry shop, Le Petit Gâteau in Carmel, Indiana.
  • Jun Itoi's (B.F.A. Photography '97) work was acquired by the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum and displayed in "Light as Medium: The TOP Collection." The exhibition debuted on March 2 and will be on display through June 5.
  • Andrea Jandernoa (M.F.A. Visual Art '19) displayed a piece titled "Foiled" in the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields as part of "Sugar: Commodity and Confection in Art." The exhibition opened on Feb. 18 and will be on display through Aug. 21.
  • In February, Corey Jefferson, a senior lecturer in ceramics, exhibited his work in "Another Look Outside," a collaborative show with Megan Jefferson at the Harrison Center for the Arts in Indianapolis.
  • From Feb. 12 to March 12, Adam Collier Noel (B.F.A. Photography '02) had a two-person show at George Billis Gallery in Westport, Connecticut.
  • Stefan Petranek, an associate professor of foundations and photography, was selected as one of 10 artists for the 2021-22 High Art billboard project, a citywide public art collaboration between the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Reagan Outdoor Advertising. "We Watch From Here as the West Burns (Greenfield, IN)" was installed at 5608 Massachusetts Ave., east of Emerson Ave. Petranek's work was also featured in "Water Works" at the Ellen Noel Art Museum in Odessa, Texas. The group exhibition, which showcases seven artists chosen from a national call, opened on Jan. 27 and will be on display until April 24.   • On the Woodpreneur Podcast in February, Brian Presnell (B.F.A. Woodworking '96), founder of Indy Urban Hardwood, discussed his Herron education and his career over the last two decades. Listen to the episode on Podcast.co.
  • Marshall University's 36th Annual Juried Student Exhibition, which ran from March 8 to March 31 in Birke Art Gallery in Huntington, West Virginia, was juried by Danielle Riede, an associate professor of foundations and painting.
  • Jordan Ryan (B.A. Art History '10), an archivist and interdisciplinary architectural historian, was named to Indianapolis Business Journal's 40 Under 40 Class of 2022. IBJ's 40 Under 40 program honors Indianapolis metropolitan individuals who have emerged as leaders in their fields.   • "Bows," a photograph by Jessica Ucul (B.F.A. Photography '11), was installed on the Guilford Avenue Kroger building in Broad Ripple as part of the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the City of Indianapolis' #IndyKeepsCreating Sidewalk Galleries Program.
  • In reaction to her 7-foot-by-9-foot papel picado piece, recently acquired by the Indiana State Museum, WRTV published a feature story on Beatriz Vasquez (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '06).
