Winter 2019 Herron Highlights

It's officially spring – a time of year at Herron when the excitement builds for "Look/See," our year-end celebration. Before we know it, capstone projects will be wrapping up and thesis exhibitions will be on view in the Herron galleries.

But first, let's take a moment to look back at what has been a busy winter for our students, alumni, and faculty. Here, we've captured all the highlights that took place between January and March.

  • Amory Abbot (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '04) exhibited Feb. 7–March 2 in "Anthelion," a solo show featuring two series of charcoal and pastel chalk drawings, at Russo Lee Gallery in Portland, Oregon.
  • Associate Professor Anila Agha exhibited in two shows during the January to March time period, including "Between Spirit and Magic" at Rossi + Rossi Gallery in Hong Kong and "Itinerant Shadows," a solo show at Talley Dunn Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Agha also exhibited March 8–April 1 in the group show "Paper" with Alexis Nunnelly (B.F.A. Painting '16) and Stuart Snoddy (B.F.A. Painting '09) at Christopher West Presents in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • Alyssa Arney (B.F.A. Printmaking '11), a member of the two-person crochet collective Thread Winners, and Joshua Ross (B.F.A. Photography '15) exhibited Jan. 15–March 15 in "Now Entering Irvine" at the Gallery @ WorkWell in Irvine, California.
  • Tasha Beckwith (B.F.A. General Fine Arts '06) exhibited Jan. 14–Feb. 24 in "Black Creativity," the nation's longest-running juried exhibition of African-American art, at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois.
  • In January, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York, N.Y., appointed Andrew Blauvelt (B.F.A. Visual Communication '86) Curator-at-Large for Design, where he will develop design-focused exhibitions for the museum.
  • David Bowen (B.F.A. Sculpture '99) exhibited in "Writing the History of the Future," featuring artwork from the ZKM Collection at the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. The two-year exhibition opened Feb. 23 and will be remain on view through March 28, 2021.
  • Amelia Briggs (B.F.A. Painting '09) exhibited March 1-30 in "Moppet," a solo show of abstract paintings on fabric-filled forms at Elephant Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee. Read an interview with Briggs in The Tennessean about her work and latest exhibition.
  • American Art Clay Company (AMACO) invited Garrett Broshar (B.F.A. Ceramics '16), Ceramics Technician Andrew Perry Davis, Visiting Lecturer Chaz Martinsen, Danielle Pugel (B.F.A. Ceramics '14), Anthony Schumann (B.F.A. Ceramics + Sculpture '16), and Naomi Waldschmidt (B.F.A. Ceramics '08) to participate in "Think Outside the Jar," an exhibition of 100 glaze jars in celebration of AMACO's 100th anniversary. The jars were exhibited during the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts' 53rd annual conference, held on March 27-30 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • Jenness Cortez (B.F.A. Painting '68) exhibited her photorealism paintings Feb. 17–March 8 in a solo show at the Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples, Florida.
  • Ray Duffey (M.F.A. Visual Art '13) served as a guest juror for Artlink's Regional Exhibition, featuring artists based in the Midwestern U.S. The exhibition was on view Jan. 4–Feb. 8 at Artlink in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
  • Bonnie Fillenwarth (B.F.A. Painting '09) exhibited in the Indiana Art Fair, held on Feb. 9-10 at the Indiana State Museum. Fillenwarth was also selected to represent Indiana in Her Flag, a nationwide collaborative project celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, involving 36 female artists.
  • Paintings by Mary Firtl (B.F.A. Painting '78) and Jessica Saunders (B.F.A. Painting '17) were selected for inclusion in the 2019 Hoosier Women Artists exhibition, on view at the Indiana Statehouse for one year. Firtl, Saunders, and other participating artists will be honored during a reception on March 27.
  • During spring break, Associate Professors Aaron Ganci and Helen Sanematsu co-led a weeklong study abroad trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, with twenty-two Herron students. Click here for their trip highlights via a collection of 10 Instagram posts and some post-study reflections.
  • Evan Hauser (B.F.A. Ceramics '14) co-curated and exhibited in the group show "Looking West," held during the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts' 53rd annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The exhibition opened March 6 and remains on view at James J. Hill House through April 7.
  • Claire Sweitzer Hawkins (B.A.E. Art Education '15) was one of 40 artists to be featured in Create Magazine's international women's print issue, published in March 2019.
  • Andrea Haydon (B.F.A. Visual Communication Design '11) was appointed Design Strategist at RATIO Architects in January. In her new role, Haydon will leverage her background in service design to "uncover powerful insights that shape end-user experiences and generate opportunities for design innovation."
  • Chris Hill (M.F.A. Visual Art '16), a Herron alumnus and adjunct instructor in photography and elective arts, was recognized during IUPUI's annual "Favorite Professor" men's and women's basketball home game on Feb. 28.
  • On March 7, an expanded version of Associate Professor and Public Scholar of Curatorial Practices and Visual Art Laura Holzman's "We're Open, Come In: The House Life Project" exhibition opened in DePauw University's Richard E. Peeler Art Center Galleries in Greencastle, Indiana. The exhibition is on view through April 9.
  • Assistant Professor Katie Hudnall exhibited Jan. 14–Feb. 23 in "Furnitur(ish)," a solo show at the University of Evansville's Melvin Peterson Gallery in Evansville, Indiana. In March, Hudnall participated in World Wood Day 2019, where she created a new piece on the floor of the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing as thousands of visitors watched the process.
  • On March 15, Samuel Levi Jones (B.F.A. Photography '09) opened his first major museum exhibition, "Left of Center," at the Indianapolis Museum of Art Galleries at Newfields in Indianapolis, Indiana. "Left of Center" is on view at Newfields through Sept. 1. Jones also exhibited in two group sjows: "On Soft Ground" (Jan. 11–June 23) at Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, presented in partnership with Paulson Fontaine Press; and "Solidary & Solitary: The Joyner/Giuffrida Collection" (Jan. 29–May 19) presented by the Helis Foundation at the University of Chicago's Smart Museum of Art.
  • Indianapolis Business Journal named Sam Julka (M.F.A. Visual Communication Design '12) one of this year's "Forty Under 40" rising stars for her work with DORIS Research, a company focused on engaging stakeholders in office-design decisions.
  • Dana Kalachnik (B.F.A. Photography '17) photographed Nashville-based artist and Instagram sensation Juliana Horner (@vesperucca) in her studio for a featured story on Society 6's blog.
  • Yasmine K. Kasem (B.F.A. Sculpture '15) exhibited Jan. 24–Feb. 23 in a solo show, "Every Moment – A Prayer," at 1805 Gallery in San Diego, California. Read a story in San Diego CityBeat about Kasem's latest work, resulting from a month-long residency at the gallery which ended Jan. 19.
  • "LIE," a virtual environment video created by Carla Knopp (B.F.A. Painting '84) using game development technology, was featured in RPM Festival's Expanded Cinema and Installation program. The festival was held on Feb. 2-3 at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
  • Lilly Endowment Inc. awarded Phil Lamie (M.A.E. Art Education '00), an art teacher at Towne Meadow Elementary School in Carmel, Indiana, a Teacher Creativity Fellowship to create an exhibit at the Carmel Children's Art Gallery about exploring America's cultural and historic gems.
  • Two paintings by Rachel Linnemeier (B.F.A. Painting '13) were selected for inclusion in "Painting Today," a group show at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona, Spain, that featured more than 70 figurative works in celebration of International Women's Day. The exhibition opened March 8 and is on view through May 5.
  • Associate Professor Jennifer Lee participated in an emerging scholars roundtable during the 46th annual Midwest Art History Society (MAHS) conference, held March 21-23 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Additionally, art history student Janice Miller presented her paper "Celebrating Femaleness: Helen Post's Poignant Photographs of Twentieth-Century Native Americans" during a MAHS session on female artists.
  • Jonathan McAfee (B.F.A. Painting '06) exhibited a new series of paintings during Superfine! Art Fair, held Feb. 14-17 in Los Angeles, California.
  • A piece by Eileen Misluk, assistant professor of art therapy, was included in "Pushing Paper," a juried group exhibition featuring 62 artists from around the country, on view Feb. 8–April 10 at the Indianapolis Arts Center. Misluk also spoke as a panelist during IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute's latest Entanglement Series event on March 26, discussing the effects of poetry and music on the mind and the body.
  • Associate Professor Stefan Petranek exhibited Jan. 31–March 22 in "The Video Show" at Gallery 924 at the Arts Council of Indianapolis. The group show highlighted time-based media artwork of 15 contemporary artists based in central Indiana.
  • Associate Professor William Potter exhibited alongside 12 artists in an Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana regional showcase at Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio. The exhibition opened on March 8 and will close on April 5.
  • Chancellor's Professor Jean Robertson chaired a session titled "The Visual Culture of Art History Education" during College Art Association's annual conference, held on Feb. 13-16 in New York, New York. During the conference, Associate Professor Laura Holzman also presented her paper "Navigating the Paradox of Public Scholarship."
  • Tré Reising (B.F.A. Sculpture '09) created the cover art for Apple Music's "Me & Bae" playlist.
  • Associate Professor Danielle Riede exhibited March 22-24 in the group show "Hands-On: A Collective Haptic Perspective" at Pancake House, an alternative art space in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • In the online magazine Dismantle Brittany Rudolf (B.F.A. Sculpture '16) wrote about a recent artist's residency project, where she created a collection of garments made from used and discarded clothing as a way of rethinking both fashion and waste. Kurt Nettleton (B.F.A. Photography '10) photographed Rudolf's work for the article.
  • Helen Sanematsu, associate professor of visual communication design, presented a workshop on using design thinking to engage community members in health research during the 2019 Joseph T. Taylor Symposium, held on Feb. 20 in the IUPUI Campus Center.
  • Autumn Schrock (B.F.A. Photography '12) co-taught a weeklong adventure photography workshop in Reine, Norway, on Feb. 1-7, to capture the northern lights as well as surrounding landscapes.
  • Marna Shopoff (M.F.A. Visual Art '14) exhibited Jan. 11–Feb. 2 in Woman Made Gallery's second Midwest Open show in Chicago, Illinois. Amy Galpin, chief curator at the Frost Art Museum in Miami, Florida, juried the show.
  • Visiting Lecturer Jake Sneath (M.F.A. Visual Art '14) exhibited Jan. 14-Feb. 2 in "Engraven Images," a solo show at Indiana Wesleyan University's 1920 Gallery in Marion, Indiana.
  • Stuart Snoddy (B.F.A. Painting '09) was published in the latest issue of New American Paintings (Midwest #137), which is now available on newsstands. Additionally, Snoddy exhibited March 20–April 25 in "The Fantasy Figures," a solo show in Ohio State University at Lima's Farmer Family Gallery.
  • The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce awarded Eric Sutton (B.F.A. Painting '93; M.A.E. Art Education '00) the 2019 Golden Apple Outstanding Educator Award. On Feb. 28, he was honored during the 2019 Chamber Awards Gala at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in Shelbyville, Indiana. Read a Q&A with Sutton to learn more about his teaching philosophy.
  • LogoLounge, the world's largest database of logos, selected five of Rik Tommasone's (B.F.A. Visual Communication '06) designs for publication in the eleventh edition of the LogoLounge book series.
  • Sketches by Andrea Townsend (B.F.A. Painting '13) are featured in "O.G.," a film starring Jeffrey Wright that premiered on HBO on Feb. 23. Michael Runge (B.A.E. Art Education '10) also worked on the film as a set dresser.
  • Shamira Wilson (B.F.A. Furniture Design) was this year's featured visual artist during Art & Soul, an annual series of events and exhibitions hosted by the Arts Council of Indianapolis in celebration of Black History Month.
