Actions for the Earth: Art, Care & Ecology is a traveling exhibition that considers kinship, healing, and restorative interventions as artistic practices and strategies to foster a deeper consciousness of our interconnectedness with the earth.

It is the result of a series of programs, pioneered with the support of the Hartfield Foundation, aimed at providing opportunities to alumni of ICI’s Curatorial Intensive as they move through the stages of their career, and reflecting ICI’s commitment to fostering and championing new curatorial voices who will shape the future of the field. Juan Arango Palacios: Tierra Caliente

Tierra Caliente—“hot land”—references the tropical lowlands near Colombia’s coffee axis, where Juan Arango Palacios was born. This exhibition features recent painting, drawing, and ceramic that explores queerness, migration, and cultural identity.

Arango Palacios reflects on longing and the unfulfilled experiences of queer immigrants in the United States. Shifting between intimate depictions of daily life and expansive mythic scenes, his work captures moments that feel both deeply personal and universally queer.

While Tierra Caliente denotes the climate and geography of the artist’s homeland, Arango Palacios also uses it to examine perceptions of Latinx bodies—how they are sexualized, consumed, and policed through media. His figures confront and deflect prejudice, transforming desire into a site of resistance and power.

Join us on Thursday, November 6, from 5 to 6 p.m., when Juan Arango Palacios will deliver the Michael A. and Laurie Burns McRobbie Emerging Artist Series artist talk and share insights into his exploration of queerness, migration, and cultural identity through his vibrant visual work in painting, drawing, and ceramics.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Juan Arango Palacios was born in Pereira, Colombia in 1997. He holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Chicago. Juan participated in the Yale Norfolk Artist Residency (2019), Bed Stuy Art Residency (Brooklyn, 2021), Macedonia Institute Residency (Chatham, 2022), and Flower Residency (Los Angeles, 2025). He has exhibited in solo exhibitions at New Image Art Gallery (Los Angeles, 2021), Tala Gallery (Chicago, 2022), Rusha & Co (Los Angeles, 2023), Spinello Projects (Miami, 2023), and Gaa Gallery (New York City, 2024). His work is a part of private collections around the world, including the collection of Beth Rudin Dewoody at The Bunker in West Palm Beach, FL.

Traditionally, a graduating cohort would cross the stage in cap and gown, not meet virtually or wear masks amid a global pandemic. This homecoming exhibition revisits the work of the classes of 2020 and 2021, highlighting the resilience, growth, and creativity that have defined the five years since COVID-19 altered the course of their commencement.

Butch Anthony: Art, Nature, and Intertwangleism explored the prolific career of artist Butch Anthony, a contemporary, self-taught artist with a keen eye for assembling objects and art in unique compositions.

Max Adrian: Swell

Adrian is a pioneering textile artist whose work explores queerness, desire, and consumerism. He finds inspiration in a variety of sewing-related crafts like quilting, bag making, inflatables, costume design, puppetry, drag, and fetish wear.

Inspired by experimental work that crosses disciplines and considers the body in compelling ways, Adrian’s hand-sewn construction and piecework sculptures pop in bold colors and a tactile materiality that references the body and form in unexpected ways, evoking moods and conversations about desire, consumer culture and queerness.

Mutability, transformation, and playfulness are consistent themes throughout his work. These concepts serve as an important reminder that something, or someone, is more complex than the initial impression we develop. Adrian's postmodern playscapes interrogate the ways in which the things we desire impact a sense of personal identity and community building in a culture of hyper stimulation.

Garrick Hargrove: Signals That Sound In The Dark

Signals That Sound In The Dark invites viewers into Hargrove's inner world, encouraging them to recognize the unique creatures that inhabit their own minds and to consider their own responses to music and art and reflect on how sound influences their perceptions. In this exhibition, Hargrove blurs media to communicate complex narratives and foster shared experiences in order to remind viewers of the beauty that emerges when we allow our minds to be free.
