Herron's summer intensives are weeklong, immersive studio sessions intended for aspiring teenage artists and designers. Sessions are held in our spacious and light-filled studios, where you will focus your creative energies and explore new techniques alongside kindred creative spirits.

The Strange and Unusual: Painting I

Delve into odd, weird, and out of the ordinary art-making.

Explore the medium of paint as well as the strange and unusual paintings of contemporary artists Mark Ryden and Tim Burton. Build your painting and creativity skills while creating surreal self-portraits, visualize characters from the creepy regions of your dreams, and observe odd objects through still-life painting. Receive a $50 discount when you sign up for both The Strange and Unusual: Painting I and Animated: Illustration I intensives.

Animated: Illustration I

Use traditional and digital techniques to animate your illustrations.

Delve into the world of animation and create digitally rendered characters, illustrations, and animations in Herron's computer labs, which are equipped with the latest technology. Learn the basics of character development and storyboarding, then create simple flipbooks and stop-motion animations, as well as animated illustrations. Contemporary Pop Art: Painting II

How do artists find inspiration in mass culture and everyday objects?

Build on your creative and observational skills while studying the work of contemporary pop artists. Be inspired by Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama to create textile patterns. Create still-life paintings using everyday objects. Explore the street art of Banksy and the sculptures of Jeff Koons to inspire your own public art designs. What is the role of characters in storytelling?

Do you love to compose characters, play games, and dream up live action role-play? Channel those interests into creating your own engaging storyline. Digital Mania

How is technology changing the way art is made?

Learn to combine art and technology using 3-D printers, laser engravers, and Wacom Cintiq drawing tablets. Explore the possibilities offered by our technological advances and make 2-D and 3-D artworks in Herron's Think It Make It Lab. Don't miss this chance to become part of the future of making. Art + Design Foundations

How do artists make a coherent body of work?

Learn how to talk about and understand contemporary art by participating in Art + Design Foundations, a simulated college course for high school students in grades 9 to 12. Gain studio art skills by exploring a variety of media, ranging from painting to 3-D printing. This intensive session is designed for aspiring artists who are interested in applying to the two-week Herron Pre-College program offered in June.

Tuition and scholarships

Tuition is $200 per teen intensive session and includes all lab fees and materials.

Financial assistance is available for qualifying families. Qualifying considerations include eligibility for free or reduced lunch and books, or family hardship due to unusual circumstances.
