Heather Leigh joined the Art Therapy program in August, 2018 as Associate Professor and Cindy Simon Skjodt Endowed Chair of Art Therapy.

Heather completed her Professional Doctorate in Art Therapy at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, WI. Her dissertation is Identifying Signature Pedagogies for Art Therapy Education: A Delphi Study. She received her M.A. in Counseling Psychology: Art Therapy from Adler University in Chicago and her B.A. in English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She taught previously as Core Faculty in Art Therapy/Counseling at Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM, Adjunct Professor at Adler University in Chicago, IL, and Guest Lecturer at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, WI.

Heather is a Board-Certified Art Therapist, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (in Illinois and applying for licensure in Indiana), and former President of the Illinois Art Therapy Association. Her theoretical expertise is Adlerian art therapy and psychotherapy, which is a strength-based, holistic approach that emphasizes increasing feelings of belonging and connection with others. As an art therapist and counselor she has worked with older adults, people with chronic mental illness, and children who have been abused and neglected. Prior to becoming an art therapist, Heather worked in corporate and non-profit communications for organizations such as Accenture and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.
