Overview

The Master of Art Education Program (MAE) is based in a social reconstructionist framework that strengthens and revitalizes the artistic and professional experience of masters level students.

Students embrace art located in museums to art of the everyday and the process of meaning making in an increasingly visual world. Students extend their understanding of the ways in which the arts contribute to human development and society as a whole and study pedagogy for preparing a visually literate public that values critical and creative thinking. Opportunities are provided to students to understand how teaching and learning in the visual arts unfolds in a variety of contexts such as galleries, museums, and other community venues and recognize the role of technology in transforming art education.Course work for this degree is divided between art content (studio, art history and culture, art criticism and theory, and aesthetics) and professional methodology. The master’s program can be taken part-time. Degree requirements for this 36 credit-hour program must be completed within five years from the time the first classes are taken.
