Community Learning Programs

Honors Art and Design

Designed for high school juniors, seniors and recent graduates who have a serious interest in art and design, the summer Honors Art & Design program offers an intensive two-week course of study developed to strengthen studio art and design skills and build a portfolio of artwork.

Honors Art & Design participants receive an authentic experience of studying visual art and design at the college level and receive guidance in planning an education in these fields. The pre-college program takes place at Herron's Eskenazi Hall on the campus of IUPUI and is taught by Herron faculty members, alumni and graduate students with teaching experience. Mentor instructors work closely with students to tie together a session’s workshops.

Honors Art & Design is structured around workshops where students learn valuable foundation techniques in both fine art and visual communication design. Assignments in areas such as drawing, painting, color theory and design are carefully developed to build basic proficiencies as well as expand creativity and understandings of creative processes. Studio experiences are similar to those students might encounter in a typical first-year college art program or the Foundation year, but are designed to meet diverse skill levels. There will be some out-of-class assignments. Field trips to nearby cultural sites along with lessons in art history are integrated into the program. Each session includes portfolio reviews and culminates with an exhibition of students' work.

Honors Art & Design is open to recent high school graduates and high school students entering junior or senior year this fall. To enroll in the program, students should have a serious interest in art or design and will need to write a short paragraph about their interest on the registration form. Class size is limited to 20 students each session. It is recommended that students only attend one session each summer.
