Visual Communication Design
Every student pursuing the Visual Communication major is provided with secure, 24-hour access to a communication design studio.
Sophomore-level majors in the Visual Communication BFA program are assigned to a Macintosh computer, a desk, chair and work space for their own use during all 200-level Visual Communication studio courses. Computers in the sophomore-level Visual Communication studios are up-to-date and loaded with all the software essential for students to learn and practice professional skills. While computers are provided in classrooms, students are encouraged to purchase their own computers for use when away from school.
Junior and Senior-level majors in the Visual Communication BFA program are assigned their own desk, chair and work space. Student's maintain their assigned work spaces for the entire semester, every semester. We believe that providing students with a permanent workspace stimulates a professional and creative culture. We want students to be able to work in a stable professional environment similar to a real-world design studio. In this studio environment students learn valuable professional skills like teamwork and professional communication. Students are able to inspire and be inspired by one another. By allowing students to spend more time at school, permanent work spaces help designers to become better, more productive, more inspired designers.
Junior and Senior-level majors in the Visual Communication BFA program are required to purchase and provide their own computers and software. We believe that when students work on their own machines, using their own software with documentation, less time is spent setting up the computer in preparation for work at the beginning of every class. Additionally, students have more control over their own computing environment for file management and system preferences. With more control over their computing environment students have a stronger ability to troubleshoot and solve (and prevent) technical problems. This means students will have more time for designing and learning. With more class time spent on important ideas and practices, students will become better skilled, more informed designers.
Every visual communication design studio is equipped with advanced technology including a color laser printer, black and white laser printer, copier, image scanning station and a digital video projection system. Students have access to the entire Indiana University library system, research databases, and digital image collections.
