Furniture Design

The Furniture Design area is split into two rooms that are defined as the bench room and the tool room. The bench room has 14 benches and some light duty tooling including drill presses, scroll saws, and mortising equipment. The benches are shared between all classes, but the advanced levels are allowed to store their own supplies, tools, etc. in storage cases underneath the benches. Students also have access to vertical lockers for the storage of lumber and other materials. Tool cabinets in the bench room also provide access to hand tools, small hand power tools, and other design materials. The bench room also has a two-station computer lab as a design resource, a drafting station and a vacuum pressing station for advanced laminating and veneer techniques.

The tool room has been out fitted with all new machinery as well as the addition of a sanding/grinding station for dust collection in heavy sanding and shaping applications. The tools found here include: 3 bandsaws, 2 planers, 2 jointers, 2 table saws, 1 vertical panel saw, a chop station with 2 saws and 1 radial arm saw, 1 router table, 1 36″ wide belt sander, 1 oscillating spindle sander, 1 oscillating 9″ edge sander, 1 20″ disk sander, 1 12″ / 6″ belt disk sander, 1 Sand-Rite pneumatic drum sander, 1 vertical metal mill and 1 large capacity metal lathe. All of these tools, coupled with an efficient dust collection system make this shop one of the premier facilities in the country for furniture design.

In addition to the bench and tool rooms the furniture design program has a filter wall spray booth and an additional room for wood storage. Both are located down the hall away from the bench area.
