Eskenazi Hall

On June 3, 2005 Herron celebrated the grand opening of its new home, Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hall, on the campus of IUPUI. This 169,000 square foot facility triples the amount of space available to Herron students.

Eskenazi Hall positions the school on the west flank of Military Park to serve as a cultural link for downtown and IUPUI. The Herron Galleries and sculpture gardens enhance the attractions of White River State Park, and neighbor other cultural destinations such as the Indiana Historical Society, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens.

Relocating Herron from its long time location at 16th and Pennsylvania Streets completes the physical and intellectual integration of the IUPUI campus. Herron’s improved accessibility to IUPUI students and the community will stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration among other schools and arts entities.

The complete renovation and redesign of the former IU School of Law at 735 West New York Street provides more than double the number of classrooms and studios, a 5,500-square-foot library, a 240-seat auditorium, 4,200-square-feet of gallery space, several digital computer labs, administrative suites with conference rooms, a terrace balcony, sculpture gardens, individual faculty offices, a student lounge, a catering kitchen, and a grand hall for events and receptions. The design of Eskenazi Hall incorporates brick, limestone, and clerestory skylights to provide natural light for studios and social spaces.

The first phase of Herron’s relocation to the IUPUI campus was completed in January 2000 with the opening of the Sculpture and Ceramics Building. The 26,000 square foot facility more than doubled classroom space available to the ceramics and sculpture programs and added gallery and academic support space. Both programs have expanded to better serve Herron degree-seeking students, as well as IUPUI students wishing to take elective art courses.

Herron was given $12 million by the state in 1995 and 1997 and as of summer 2005 is in the final phase of their $17.5 million capital campaign. Naming opportunities still exist for patrons wanting to participate. Call (317) 278-9469 for more information.
