Ceramics
The Ceramics studio, located in the Sculpture/Ceramics building, is well equipped to expose the students to a full range of techniques and possibilities that can be achieved with ceramic media. Students learn to become self-sufficient ceramic artists by gaining an understanding of a studio operation from mixing clay and glazes to firing various types of kilns and temperature ranges.
The beginning classroom accommodates both wheel throwing and hand building with 20 wheels, 12 large tables, 2 wedging tables and abundant shelving. The intermediate classroom for juniors includes 8 wheels, 10 tables, an extruder and slab roller. There is also an advanced classroom providing individualized spaces for senior ceramic majors. These students are allowed to develop their own curriculum as they continue to research traditional and alternative techniques including slip casting and image transfer.
All students have access to the clay mixing room with dry material storage and three mixers. Students participate in mixing clay for their projects. In addition there is fully stocked glaze room and a spray booth. The indoor kiln room is equipped with 9 electric kilns of various sizes, three test kilns and two Bailey gas car kilns. The outdoor kiln yard includes two additional electric kilns, a salt/soda kiln, two gas kilns, raku kiln, and three containers for smoke/pit firing.
In addition there are shared facilities with sculpture that include a dedicated plaster room for mold making for slip casting, an Apple computer lab with scanners and printers, a large gallery/critique space, and an outdoor special projects space.
