Art Education
The Art Education suite includes rooms that support creative, messy studio work. There are rooms that are technology savvy with outlets for all student laptops and digital projection. Rooms share an inner “sanctuary” for student work and relaxing. There are preparation resources and equipment for providing state of the art images from art/visual culture for teaching. Mounting presses, laminating, prep tables, photocopy, color printer, computer, digital video or digital still cameras, traditional cameras, tape recorders; all equipment for doing action research to capture student learning and teacher documentation of teaching. This is imperative to developing skills/habits of the reflective teacher. We are constantly reflecting back on what our students learned and how we could better facilitate learning. Students have access to photostands for copy work. We have bookcases of textbooks under adoption every 6 years in the state. IUPUI is a textbook adoption site. We get all books/visuals up for adoption and get to keep them. This includes art books for kids on media, techniques, and artists (history/biography). There are also games and puzzles for educational use on artists and styles and aesthetics. We also have flat files filled with large color images of art from past to present as well as DVD/VCR tapes on different artists/media/theory students can use in their teaching. We also have a frig for students, tackable boards for announcements, and tables for work/meetings. It is a social gathering place that is small, but invaluable and remains open when classes are not in session as well for student use as a learning community. It is their space and is vital to sustaining a program that is meaningful to the students and represents their voice. Students also meet here to prepare professional work and share ideas as part of the student organizations: Art Education Association of Indiana and National Art Education Association.
